DELF/DALF
DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) exam
DELF/DALF
The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) exam is an internationally recognized French language certification awarded by the French Ministry of Education. It assesses non-native speakers on their ability to communicate in French through practical, real-life language tasks. The exam is available at six levels (A1 to C2), based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Each DELF exam level evaluates the four key language skills:
- DELF A1: This is the beginner level of DELF that tests basic communication skills in French.
- DELF A2: This is the elementary level of DELF that tests basic communication skills, including the ability to talk about common topics and situations.
- DELF B1: This is the intermediate level of DELF that tests the ability to communicate effectively in French in everyday situations, including discussions on more complex topics.
- DELF B2: This is the upper-intermediate level of DELF that tests the ability to communicate fluently in French across a wide range of topics, including professional contexts.
- DELF C1: This is the advanced level of DELF that tests high-level language skills, including the ability to express opinions, debate, and analyze complex issues.
- DELF C2: This is the highest level of DELF that tests mastery of French language skills, including the ability to understand and produce complex literary texts and academic language.
Each level of the DELF exam has its own set of requirements and covers different skills and topics. Students can take the exam at the level that matches their language proficiency level.
DELF EXAM OVERVIEW
The DELF exam consists of four components: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The format and structure of the exam vary according to the level. Here is a general overview of the DELF exam pattern:
In this section, candidates listen to audio recordings such as conversations, announcements, interviews, or short dialogues. The tasks involve answering questions to demonstrate comprehension. The complexity of the audio increases with each level — from simple, everyday conversations at A1 to complex discussions and academic topics at C1 and C2.
This part tests your ability to understand written French. You'll read a variety of texts such as notices, emails, articles, or extracts from literary and academic texts, depending on the level. Questions test your ability to extract specific information, understand context, and interpret the writer’s intention.
The writing task requires candidates to express themselves clearly and correctly in written French. At lower levels, this might involve writing postcards, emails, or short messages. At higher levels, candidates are expected to write essays, formal letters, or analytical texts, demonstrating both grammar and structure.
This section involves a face-to-face interview with one or more examiners. It assesses pronunciation, fluency, and the ability to express ideas and opinions. Tasks range from simple self-introductions and role-plays at beginner levels to structured presentations and debates at advanced levels.
The DELF A1 and A2 levels typically last for a maximum of 1 hour and 20 minutes, while levels B1 and B2 last for a maximum of 4 hours. Levels C1 and C2 consist of two separate exams, each lasting for a maximum of 3 hours.
